The model is the easy part. The decision built on top of the model is where the risk lives, and where the value is.

Predictive analytics has moved from a quiet corner of the analytics team to the heart of how operational decisions get made. A churn score becomes a retention offer. A fraud probability becomes a transaction block. A health-risk prediction becomes a care-plan trigger. Each of these is a decision that affects a real customer, and each is now scrutinised by regulators, by customers themselves, and by the legal team that has to defend it.

The new discipline around predictive analytics is not about better models. The model technology is mature. The discipline is about everything that surrounds the model: the data lineage that makes it auditable, the monitoring layer that catches drift before it becomes a wrong action, the decision log that lets you reconstruct what happened when the customer asks why.

The three things that separate production from prototype

First, a documented training data lineage. You cannot defend a prediction without being able to point to the data that taught the model to make it. Second, drift monitoring. The world moves; your training distribution does not. The gap between them is silently degrading every prediction you make until somebody notices. Third, a decision log: every score, every threshold, every action, recorded in a form that a third party can replay six months later.

None of this is new advice for mature ML teams. What is new is that it is no longer optional. The EU AI Act, sectoral rules in finance and healthcare, and a wave of state-level legislation have moved these from best practice to baseline.
